AR-01 Automotive Relay Operation Description
The AR-01 Automotive Relay Provides a simple solution for the hookup of powered accessories in any 12VDC system, such as those found in Automobiles, Trucks, Motorcycles, Boats, RV's ATV's, Trailers etc. The AR-01 is capable of switching and powering up to 30 Amps. The AR-01 consumes no power while it is not triggered, so there is no worry of draining batteries when not used. The AR-01 is contained in a RUGGED ABS plastic housing with a mounting hole provided. The unit is fully EPOXY ENCAPSULATED making it completely WATERPROOF. All electrical connections are made externally with automotive grade wire.
The AR-01 requires 12VDC and a GROUND connection to be applied to the POWER CONNECTION (+ RED and - BLK) wires respectively in order to operate.
There are three RELAY SWITCH CONNECTIONS, which consist of a common switch connection (COM) YEL wire, a Normally Closed (NC) WHT/BLK wire and a Normally Open (NO) WHT connection. The load or devise which should be switched is connected in series with these connections. Most applications will require only two of these wires to be connected.
The Normally Open connection is used when it is desired to switch the Load ON, and the Normally Closed connection is used when it is desired to switch the Load OFF.
CAUTION
The RELAY SWITCH CONNECTIONS must be connected in Series with the load, and MUST NEVER be Connected across the Battery or Power source terminals.
NOTE: It is good practice to install an appropriately sized fuse into this circuit for protection of the Load and the AR-01 Relay contacts.
There are two operating modes of the AR-01, SWITCH and FLASHING. Each operating mode has two trigger methods, a Positive Trigger and a Negative Trigger. The FLASHING mode causes the AR-01 switch to turn ON and OFF at a repetitive rate of approximately 53 cycles per minute or (0.88 hertz). The SWITCH mode turns the load either ON or OFF depending on the RELAY SWITCH CONNECTION.
The CONTROL SIGNALS:
NEGATIVE TRIGGER is a direct connection to the AR-01 Relay Coil. As such this signal will override all other control signals. To make the trigger function, connect the GREEN wire to circuit GROUND. 150ma of current is required. The coil will activate with a voltage above GROUND, but not more than 5VDC, otherwise the coil may not "pull-in" reliably.
POSITIVE TRIGGER is the most sensitive, to function connect the BLU wire to a minimum voltage of 1.0VDC @ 0.5ma to operate and the voltage can be as high as 14VDC @ 7.5ma. This sensitivity is excellent for Triggering the AR-01 directly from speaker connections when a separate remote signal is not available.
FLASHING NEGATIVE TRIGGER will activate the AR-01 Flashing function when the BRN wire is connected to circuit GROUND or a voltage up to 5VDC above GROUND. This signal requires 2.5ma to 1.0ma of current to operate.
FLASHING POSITIVE TRIGGER will activate the AR-01 Flashing function when the GRY wire is connected to 5VDC to 14VDC above circuit GROUND. This signal requires 6ma to 18ma of current to operate.
NOTE: Activating either the POSITIVE or NEGATIVE TRIGGER during either flashing mode will cause the AR-01 to operate continuously, thereby interrupting the flashing mode of operation. All four control signals are protected from reverse hook-up, as well as the two Power connections (+ RED and - BLK).
